Thaler — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 26 June 2026

Thaler (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a personal-finance app that helps you track spending, budgets, and net worth. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.

Our core principle: your financial data stays on your device. Thaler is local-first. The accounts, transactions, budgets, assets, and debts you enter are stored in a database on your phone, not on our servers. We do not have a server that holds your financial data, and we never sell your data.

1. What data the app handles, and where it stays

a) Financial data you enter (accounts, transactions, budgets, assets, debts, notes, attachments). Stored only on your device. We cannot see it. It leaves your device only if you choose to back up to your own Google Drive or export a file (see below).

b) Crash reports & usage analytics — opt-in, OFF by default. If (and only if) you turn on “Share diagnostics & analytics” in Settings, the app sends anonymous crash reports and basic usage events (e.g. which screens are opened) to Google Firebase (Crashlytics & Analytics) to help us fix bugs and improve the app. This never includes your transactions, amounts, account names, or other financial details. You can turn it off at any time.

c) Bank/wallet notification access — opt-in. If you enable auto-capture, Thaler reads incoming bank/payment notifications on your device to pre-fill draft transactions for your review. This processing happens on your device; the notification content is not transmitted to us. You can disable this any time in your device settings or in the app.

d) Microphone (voice add) — only while you use it. If you use “Voice add”, your speech is sent to your device’s built-in speech-recognition service (e.g. Google) to convert it to text, the same way voice typing works. We do not record or store your audio.

e) Google Drive / Google Sheets backup & sync — optional, you initiate it. If you connect your Google account, backups and sheet syncs are written to your own Google Drive/Sheets. The data goes to your Google account, not to us. We request the narrowest scope needed to create and manage these files.

f) Biometric unlock (fingerprint/face) — on-device only. Handled entirely by your device’s secure hardware. We never receive your biometric data.

g) Camera / photos (receipt scanning) — only when you scan. Used to capture or pick a receipt image for on-device text extraction. Images stay on your device unless you attach and back them up yourself.

2. What we do NOT do

3. Permissions and why

Permission Why
Notification access Optional auto-capture of bank/payment notifications, on-device
Microphone Optional voice entry of transactions
Camera / photos Optional receipt scanning
Notifications (post) Budget alerts, bill reminders, recaps
Biometric Optional app lock
Internet Live exchange/price lookups, and (only if enabled) Google backup + diagnostics

You can decline or revoke any of these in your device settings; the app remains usable, with the related feature turned off.

4. Data retention & deletion

5. Children

Thaler is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect data from them.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live (e.g. GDPR in the EU/UK, CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your data, and to withdraw consent. Because your financial data is stored on your own device, you already control it directly (view, edit, export, or delete in-app). For anything else, contact us.

7. Third-party services

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, notify you in the app.
